Getting cheated less by auto wala's (3 wheeler taxi in India).

TL/DR : Best way to deal with an auto guy is not to deal with him if he asks for more than 1.5 times the meter, know the start and end point, kms (of main route and alternatives in case of blocks), if the first few are asking for more, wait 4-5 till you get a nice person. Keep an eye on the meter while travelling, some of them jump (run at 2x speed). A smart phone, with google maps and a good internet connection helps. or use Ola/ Uber application or the like.

Journey : Abshot layout near Windsor manor, Sankey Road (near the BGC golf course) to Coles Road Petrol Bunk, Fraser Town
Approximate distance : 4.5 km
Approximate auto cost in Bangalore 2009 : Rs32/-
first auto : Ok but it will be Rs.70/-
I look away, do not care to even say another word to him. He drives off to the next person, hopefully richer or more in a hurry or ignorant of the auto wala average.

No, not average cost. but average personality. my rule of thumb is 1 in 6 is nice. so when i have time, i will wait till at least 6 autos stop (do not count the guys who are empty but do not stop.), ask me where I want to go, demand excess fare.

the 5th or 6th will go with the meter, or ask for Rs.5/- or 10 over which is OK. if they do not ask and i like the way they drove - no unnecessary horn or swerves and sharp turns to over take, then they get $s10 to 20 as a tip anyway.

worst auto person lately was at Coles road, came at 11pm for 1.5 but his meter was running at 2x, Yes TWO TIMES THE FARE! so he was going to get 150% of 200% = 350%. Luckily my wife noticed it soon, we stopped, told the beat cops there and called 100, both only talked to him (the crap cops we have in this country, no bribe opportunity or so "I don't care unless there is danger or your a VIP". that guy was the pits, esp when he started fighting before the cops came saying his meter is ok but cause of the 1 ways the distance was more than we went (err, i have made the same journey both ways many times as i was shifting home, nee ass lock @#@!^ @#$$@**) and his vehicle number was in Kannada, in my excitement i forgot to click a snap of the number plate. though the beat police took it down, am sure they would have done anything only if we went missing or there was violence. rule should be changed to make beat police act like general police when there is no imminent danger/ job at hand.

God help us. but i hope the tip of - ignore 3-4 autos who demand more than 20% more. know the approximate distance and fare.
